The Majors
The Civil & Environmental Engineering Department offers two majors. The curriculum for each major is designed to prepare graduates for the professional practice of civil or environmental engineering and for graduate study in the fields. Graduates also learn the skills needed to maintain their state-of-the-art proficiency in the fields throughout their careers. In the first three semesters, students take foundational courses in mathematics, sciences, and engineering, empowering them with the technical skills to succeed in their engineering courses. Students are introduced to the design of civil and environmental engineering infrastructure starting in the sophomore year in which they gain experience in engineering science and design in structural, geotechnical, transportation, environmental and water resources engineering. In design teams and in project-based learning courses, students tackle solutions to major design experiences in core areas. To prepare them for their careers as practitioners, students must complete two design elective courses in combination with a professional practice seminar to satisfy major design experience requirements. Oral and written communication skills, applying a systems approach and an understanding of the responsibility of the engineer to society are emphasized throughout the curriculum, culminating in a professional practice seminar that integrates these concepts.
The freshman and sophomore year curricula in Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering are identical. During the junior and senior years, students select required and elective courses relevant to their chosen majors.
Requirements
No course taken on a pass/fail basis may be applied to General Education, major or PR-ENGIN requirements.
Course pre-requisites should be checked and may require obtaining a minimum grade to satisfy the prerequisite requirement
